Solutions for Less Than Stellar Wakeboard Wake

Just picked up a 2021 MB Sports B52 23 Alpha last fall. Surfed it all winter and was pumped with the surf wave. Now it’s finally getting warm enough to get the kids in the water for some wakeboarding and I have to admit, I’m very disappointed in the shape/quality of the wake. I came from a 21’ Mastercraft Maristar 210 VRS and with just a little bit of ballast (approx 100lbs in each rear locker), that boat made a super clean, firm wake with a great transition on both sides.

The issue I believe I’m having is with the Fresh Air Exhaust. Not really well designed from a fluid dynamics standpoint, it just creates a crumbly mess on both lips, as well as an obnoxious rooster tail right at about 65’ which is where we’ve been riding. I can lengthen the rope with no issues, but the lip is really soft and isn’t really even comparable to my old boat (thankfully I still have that one so I’m not totally hosed, but it’s a bummer that I don’t have the option of having a great surf wake and a great wakeboard wake).

Are there any known fixes for this issue? I can imagine I’m the only one.

What speed are you riding at? The wake can be harder to clean up at slower speeds. When I pull my kids I'm going about 18 and I have to make sure the weight is well balanced otherwise it won't be a clean wake. I put a little water in both ballast tanks and drain it off while underway until it gets clean. At faster speeds, it's not quite as weight sensitive and the wake is great. I don't have an FAE so I can't speak to that portion. Glad to see someone still wakeboards around here!

Sorry it took so long to respond. Just saw your post. Usually pull kids 16 -20mph. Around 25, with no ballast, the wake cleans up nicely. But that’s just too fast for wakeboarding. Throughout this summer I’ve identified that center trim plate doesn’t always return to ‘fully retracted’. Sometimes it stays about 3/4” deployed and I have to run it down a little then back up to get it all the way up. That has definitely helped, but the major contributor is the FAE and I’m still looking for a solution to that. Considering having a buddy get creative with a new shaped plate. I’ll report back if that dream ever becomes a reality.
